Murray Russel’s dream boat has always been a Rayglass Legend 2500. Four years ago when he and his wife Barbara retired, they were busy setting up their life on the lake in Taupo where they settled after they finished work. The boat would have to wait.

Muzza and Barb decided enough was enough. They put in an order for a brand new Legend 2500 with the team here at Rayglass and Matt Flanagan, our Sales and Marketing Manager, drove it down to Taupo to drop it off.

Meet Murray, Barb and the family

Before their retirement Murray and Barbara lived in Hamilton, where they held the contract for the city’s rubbish dump and recycling. Four years ago they decided to call it quits and retire to Taupo.

They’ve got two adult kids and four grandkids, aged nine to seven. Murray says the two boys aren’t bad with a rod.

“The older boys love fishing. They’ll stand on the jetty all day trying to catch Kawhai and they’ve caught a few too. I’m looking forward to getting them out on the new boat and watching them reel in some big snapper.”

The road to a Rayglass Legend

Murray also used to fish out at Raglan, where he had half-shares on a 22 foot tinny with a big Yamaha motor on the back. The boat was perfect for fishing, but Muzza says it wasn’t quite right for taking the grandkids out.

“I was coming up to retirement and I wanted a diesel with an inboard so that I could have a little kitchen and a toilet for the grandkids. I bought a Rayglass Cruisemaster with a 210 Volvo Diesel in it. It was a great boat but I didn’t use it as much as I would have liked to. I recently sold it to a fella in Russell and started looking at the 2500.”

We’re so happy to hear that Murray had a positive experience ordering, customising and receiving his Rayglass Legend 2500.

“It was pretty special actually. I dealt with Matt all the way through. I couldn’t ask for anyone better to deal with,” Murray said.

One of Murray’s favourite parts of the ordering process was the regular updates he got on his boat’s build.

“I was pretty excited to get my hands on the boat. I got regular progress updates the whole way through, including photos photos. It was meant to arrive around Christmas but in August Matt drove down to Taupo and dropped the boat off early. He even gave me a run through on how to use everything.”

Russell family: Summer on the water

The first trip on the new boat was a beauty by all accounts. Murray and Barbara popped out to an Island off Pauanui for lunch, threw a line in and caught a big snapper almost instantly.

“I reckon that’s a pretty good omen for the new boat!” Murray says.

The family’s got big plans for the summer, with plenty trips.

“I reckon we’ll have to head out to Slipper Island and Cooks Beach. I might even go out to the Twins and the Merc Islands, and maybe grab some scallops out at Opito Bay. Me and Barb will probably do quite a bit of overnighting as well”

Murray’s verdict

If our customers aren’t happy, neither are we. When we checked back in with Murray to see how his boat was treating him, we were stoked to hear he was loving it.

“I just like the whole concept of the boat. The way the toilet and the kitchen fit in seamlessly makes it easy and comfortable to overnight, and spend a bit of time on the water. I’ve always wanted an inboard diesel as well, and this one’s beautifully hidden so you barely even know it’s there. There’s great fishing out the back and deck space for days. It’s been my dream boat for a long, long time and it’s definitely lived up to expectations - A world class experience that I cold not recommend highly enough!”
